Hey, I am important 👋
I wanted to make sure you understood that no translation card can completely eliminate your exposure risk.
They are, however, incredibly useful tools to help minimise it. It's important to be transparent and highlight the factors upfront that are out of my control, such as:
Languages often use different words to describe the same ingredient.
Regional dialects can change the meaning of words.
The literacy of people and their overall understanding of allergens.
The willingness and/or ability of people to carry out the request.
Your own ability to assess the situation and follow an emergency plan.
The risk of cross contamination in food preparation areas.
What's the backstory of this project?
Getting diagnosed with coeliac disease back in 2015 was both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand my new diet meant I felt better than I had in years, but it also made eating out incredibly stressful. Especially when travelling abroad.
Having visited over 40 countries, I understand the challenges of minimising your exposure risk to potential allergens - that is where restaurant cards play an important role.
Most options on the market are incredibly expensive. So I taught myself to code so I could build my own affordable solution. Ensuring as many people have access to it as possible.
Why don't you cover all of the top 14 allergens?
It costs a lot of money to get translations done professionally. Therefore, the initial focus will be on the 9 most common allergens. Depending on the sucess of the project, more may be added over time.
Do you sell physical cards?
Unfortunately, the decision was made to focus exclusively on digital solutions. That allows me to keep costs as low as possible, passing the savings on to you, as well as being better for the environment.
However, if you really need physical cards I would suggest checking out either AllergyUK or EqualEats.
